In the vein of The Strokes, Manchester Orchestra, and a mix of a high-school Cedric Bixler (Fro/At-The-Drive In), Signals can colour inside the lines as they are experimenting with playground slides and electronic overdub instead of drugs and overochestrated arrangements that make The Mars Volta appear to be baroque, burned out, stuck-in-the 60’s street Shamans that were tragically subject to Los Angeles’s notoriety as a crime-ridden, over-achieving art/business scene that finally came into pathetic, sonic-fruition on 2007’s The Bedlam In Goliath with the prog-rockers play the role of The Davids (Small Packages, Large Hands… Just Like The Statue In Florence) without Biblical success in slaying anything in a critical manner since ancient times: that is, Frances The Mute (2005). Born on the mean streets of Jackson, Mississippi, Signals payed their dues by having good parents, racial diversity, a scrupulous police force at their back, as well as access to superb, crumbling private schooling and a bevy Fondren Hipsters who play PSP while imbibing caffeine and an artistic lifestyle between the ghetto and Chik-Fil-A. As I was first introduced to the forefather of the lead singer of Signals through an admission through of a friend “that he [Knowltons Father] has excellent taste in music, and likes U2 despite the feelings of his children”, made me revisit the notion that fathers are always right: especially when he has graduated from college and you hear his name referenced by 18 year old girls during lunch and in class with moderately pornographic but realistically flattering bouts of truth in the form of Brad Pitt conceits fit for the classiest of tabloids.
